Leang Seckon was born in Cambodia around the time of the onset of the American bombings of Indochina. Leang grew up during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, amid the Cambodian-Vietnamese War. His densely painted and collaged surfaces are filled with symbolic representations of a traumatic past, both on a cultural and personal level. A 2002 graduate of the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh, Leang participated in the 2012 Shanghai Biennale. He is considered to be one of the foremost members of the emerging Cambodian contemporary arts scene, and was awarded a medal from the Queen Norodom Monineath in 2014.
